Hey Carrie, I love your blog! I've actually stumbled on it before, I'm glad you left a comment on mine to let me know you're local, I will be back more often now! I've actually never shopped at Grocery Outlet b/c I thought it would be all the typical nasty stuff, but I will be checking it out.

I hope you tried the cranberry chutney and liked it!

We do a lot of things very similarly, I was glad to read that my husband is not the only one who'd rather be eating Doritos while I'm cramming things like baked kale and apples under his nose :)

We don't have a Grocery Outlet near here, but once a month I travel to an area where there several outlet/discount grocery stores. I love the fun of the hunt - it's unpredictable what they'll have, but I love getting wonderful quality food at amazing prices. (I always find it ironic that the things that I get excited most people are walking right by. :( )

Olivia,

Thanks for the interesting info! I've done a little research into the subject of nitrates and it does seem you'd have to consume an awful lot to be harmful, but since we're all pretty much not optimally healthy, that amount could be different for everyone. I read somewhere that Vitamin C is important to take with foods containing nitrates/nitrites, and so even when we have our "uncured" bacon and hot dogs (which are still rare treats) I always make sure they eat them with sauerkraut, broccoli, or an orange to get some good vitamin C!

Thanks for the comment!

You've just reminded me of an interesting discussion about cured foods and nitrates/nitrites on Kelly the Kitchen Kop's site awhile back (post here): they concluded that 1) there are still nitrates in most "natural, uncured" bacon and hot dogs, they're just disguised by coming from celery or another natural source 2) nitrates and nitrites aren't actually dangerous in the quantities we get from food (there's a very in depth investigation of the dangers and history at Junkfood Science

I absolutely love Grocery Outlet. I was so sad when the closest one closed their doors. I do have access to one when I go to my weaver's guild meetings, so I always try to allow time to stop by and shop.
