Thank you for writing this as I've been wondering the same thing.

I live in Kansas surrounded by beautiful farms yet know there are many who are hungry in my area. The local church foodbank parking lot is packed each week with people in need.

Our school budgets have been slashed, yet their acres of grass still get mowed. I, like you, have many questions but no real solutions or places to start. The ideas you broke down make sense and are fairly simple. I'll be sure to try some of them now.

Here's a few other ideas I found: www.backyardharvest.com sign-up to start a local chapter or donated your unwanted harvest (article featured in July '09 Family Circle).

@ RF mama,

Thanks for the link! That's so good to know!

@ Food Renegade,

As always, thanks for hosting!

@emily,

I think the same thing when I drive by a school. I hope someday to invest more time and activism energy into making this happen in my community!

i really pray these ideas catch on. i look at the 100s of feet of grass at my kids public school and think- why couldnt this be a mini-farm with the food going to the many low-income families here?

What a great post! I am really interested in hearing other perspectives about providing fresh local food to urban dwellers, especially the urban poor and am so glad to see others out there who have the same viewpoint!

My local farmer's market here in Santa Fe accepts food stamps and many of the vendors accept WIC, which is great. Here is the link: http://www.santafefarmersmarket.com/
